This two owner truck originally sold in 1949, is one of six purchased by the Haas/Lilenthal family as general purpose work trucks for their ranch in the California Central Valley. After the ranch was sold, the best of the six was chosen as the garden and utility truck for their Hillsborough estate on the San Francisco Peninsula . Years later the estate was sub-divided and the truck was brought down to their new home in Atherton, again to serve as the family general purpose around town truck. The present owner received this truck in the summer of 1977, with 98,550 miles on the odometer. He drove it up the Chico , back to the Central Valley, and while in college restored the truck. Except for the bed which was replaced with an original same year and same type, due to a tree falling on it, the truck is all original. The wooden bed boards were replaced and it was painted in that year. A rebuilt engine was installed with 04200 miles on the odometer. The present owner then moved back to the Bay Area in 1979 and assures me the truck hasn't been out of San Mateo County more than 15 times in 29 years. Stating “I have used this truck as a town utility vehicle to go to the lumber yard, dumps and moving my family and friends stuff around,” he added “I have always respected the fact that this is not a safe vehicle to drive as a commuter car at modern freeway speeds and I have only allowed a select few people to drive this truck over these 29 years.” The wood was once again replaced and the truck repainted again in 1995 and at that time he did some general maintenance repairs including redoing the brake systems. “This old gal has been stored under a shed on the side of my home for 25 years away from most of the weather, and driven only a 100 some miles a year. She really needs to get out a bit more.” He has a new truck now and so has decided to let her go to a new home. Commenting; “I promised the original owner first right of refusal if I were to ever sell her, but do to his age he has sadly declined, so she's on the market.” The truck runs great, but needs a bit of TLC. The owner say: “the primary things I would do to improve drivability are, replace the radiator, which doesn't leak, but she runs little hot in the summer months as the core is slightly clogged,” and, “she could use a new steering box to reduce a little of her wandering nature, but hey she did j ust fine for what I needed for a long time....she seeps a little oil, its not a leak, but she's been parked on dirt so hasn't ever bugged me.” This truck has clearly been a loved companion only seeing very light duties, never used by any young reckless drivers or treated roughly, and has lived its entire life in the rust free California climate. Maybe not a “barn find” as you would be hard pressed to find a barn on the San Francisco Peninsula now, but never-the-less, this is a documented two owner truck in wonderful original condition! The present owner would prefer the new owner “keep her original; over the years I have had a lot of people interested in buying her because of her unmolested bones to build a Hot Rod. It would be nice to see her preserved.” |
