1969 280SL Mercedes VIN # 12-005591 This is a beautiful local Bay Area 280SL finished in tan with chocolate interior and chocolate soft and hard tops. This little Mercedes is an excellent driver! Oil pressure is spot on 45lbs, she runs cool, the 4 speed automatic shifts crisply, steering is precise and the engine pulls to 6000 RPM when asked. The brakes are excellent and the car handles nicely, no squeaks, rattles and smooth at freeway speeds….and beyond. No oil smoke on start-up, acceleration or on deceleration. The exhaust system seems sound, but not new. The paint is shinny, smooth and generally very nice and quite presentable. The car shows some evidence of repaint and some spot work, but on the whole is very nice. The chrome is very good, with good luster and few if any pitting. The interior leather is next to perfect as are the carpets, and were clearly redone. Seats have good foam and are well cushioned and not broken down. All gauges work, wipers operate as do all lights, including interior light as best I can tell. The soft top is in excellent condition and not faded. The hard top is next to perfect, and shows little use. There is no rust in the car! Rocker panels are sound; battery area is good, trunk and passenger floors perfect. Underneath of the car is quite sanitary, but not concourse clean. This little SL would make an excellent and really nice weekend driver, or if desired a full restoration to show quality as most all bits appear to be with the car. Known issues with the car are: small nose badge is in the glove box not installed on the hood, the optional AC blows, but not cold, radio is in-op, missing antenna also, trunk light not wired, missing spare tire, no tool kit or books, housing on left rear side marker light pops out of rubber grommet, top mechanism missing a spring and thus is a bit finicky to raise, lights are not aligned correctly, ash tray ( we have it) needs its top hinge replaced, upper edge of windshield under front top bow has a slight tear hole in its fabric covering. Front bumper alignment may need fiddling; possibly lower valence under bumper was not well aligned when painted and last the battery is tired. Clearly this is a nice car, both cosmetically and mechanically, but not a show car, but she draws nice compliments whenever parked. She needs someone to attend to the details and make her a really nice example. These are wonderful drivng classics that can be used day to day. The trunk will hold two small golf bags, or a lot of weekend luggage. The 4 speed automatics is excellent and thus the cars are great freeway as well as around town drives and they handle well in the twisty too. European or International buyers: we can assist with shipping arrangements. This is a private party car consigned to Driveline for sale. Price: P.O.A. Please call if interested 650-261-1777. |
